Critical Studies The current art school trend in critical studies is an almost compulsive fascination with topics such as pluralism, colonialism, the marginalization of populations and subcultures, feminist theory, psychoanalysis and cross-culturalism. These political subjects dominate what should be the study of the visual arts. In fact, throughout history art has expressed both political and non-political subjects in a way that transcends time as a result of its visual nature. This has been achieved by the artist's emotive powers in collaboration with his or her medium and the spiritual synergy that exists between them. At the San Francisco Studio School, the obvious need to confront contemporary political and societal issues is recognized and embraced. At the same time, at SFSS the power of the visual and the imagination are the central subject of critical studies over today's political and psychoanalytic fascination. |
