Facilities
The school is located on a historic side street in
downtown San Francisco in an area known as Jackson Square, which has all
the charm of old San Francisco. The area is adjacent to North Beach as
well as the financial district and easily accessible by public
transportation.
The 7,000 square foot working space at the San Francisco Studio School
is comprised of a large studio with shared areas for drawing, painting
and mixed media. There is a separate studio for photography. The light
in the studios has been designed to provide constant levels while
allowing control of lighting on models, still life and other setups.
This allows varying lighting scenarios while ensuring constancy of
illumination. There is a common area where critical studies, critiques
and discussions are held. There is also a mid-sized darkroom. Basic
computer workstations are available for digital photography. In
addition, the school also maintains a gallery presenting exhibitions
related to the involvements and philosophy of the school.
Technical knowledge is assumed for most students who will concentrate in
photography. Instructors and fellow students help those new to
photographic processes and procedures. Local independent black and white
and color facilities supplement the school image processing facilities,
allowing each student to meet his or her specific needs in a customized
manner.
