Mixed Media

The study of mixed media at the San Francisco Studio School is directed primarily toward collage, montage and assemblage. These forms conform to the overall concentration in the two-dimensional visual arts at the school; and they relate most strongly to painting and photography in terms of the exploration of color, form and imagery. Often, photography will provide imagery for mixed media work, while painting will contribute formal, color and textural elements. For both the painter and the photographer, mixed media presents a ground between a wholly unified surface and one comprised of actual physical parts. Drawing is closely linked to mixed media in its approach to the division of space, and collage often expands the visual meaning of the act of drawing.
