Painting

Painting is a discipline with a profound and compelling tradition spanning history. Its study combines reverence for the past and the need to respond to contemporary times with originality of vision.

Color is studied both technically and theoretically. Composition, supported by the school's emphasis on drawing, is studied in terms of its function on the picture plane. Brushwork is considered in relation to both descriptive and expressive needs. Imagery is determined by working from perception and from the student's own preoccupations. Students are encouraged to establish a sound technical relationship with their medium, which will include becoming conversant in working with both oil and acrylic paints.

Linked with critical studies the study of painting is expanded by investigating the need to paint, the meaning of painting to the painter's life throughout history, painting's relation to imagery and the importance of insight and the imagination.
