2010 Photography Intensive Schedule

Photography requires the interaction of photographer and subject and the SF Studio School is located in the historic Jackson Square district adjacent to North Beach, China Town and the Financial District, offering photographers a wide variety of photographic opportunities. Shared studio and basic computer workstations are available as appropriate to the workshop participant. For both workshops, digital photography is encouraged.

Photography: The Concept of Concept - Rescheduled
2-Day Photography Intensive
Saturday, July 24th to Sunday, July 25th: 10AM to 5PM
Faculty: Laura Harden, Lon Clark

Concept in art has been the focus and fascination of museums, the gallery world, BFA and MFA photography programs and the international art press for 30 years. But how do you develop and express concept well -- or evolve your expression of concept with photography? And how do you bring a sense of freshness to a genre of photography that has become generic, and which the art world is beginning to tire of? This intensive workshop is designed to answer those questions through a well-organized photography-specific series of definitions, slideshows, exercises and personally relevant investigations.

Tuition: $175/2 days + $25 Registration Fee
Payment due in full at time of registration. Cancellations must be made in writing 10-days before first day of workshop for a full tuition refund. Registration fee is non-refundable.

Space is limited, early enrollment is suggested. Please email info@sfstudioschool.org or call 415-398-4300 if you have questions or prefer to register by email.

Materials list will be provided upon registration.

The Art of Street Photography
Dates: TBA
9:30AM to 5PM
Faculty:
Laura Harden, Lon Clark

Street photography involves acute observation, intense distillation and the art of improvisation. This 3-day total immersion workshop concentrates on the fluid and purposeful photographic interaction with the constantly changing rhythms of the city, the neighborhood and the street. The urban environment, people, time of day, selective seeing and the individual vision of the photographer will be investigated through a series of slides shows, exercises and continual hands on photographing and editing. The relationship of street photography to documentary photography, reportage and the photo essay will be investigated and each participant will be supported in arriving at a particular view of the subject and its interpretation.

The workshop will draw on the multiple-cultural fabric of the neighborhoods bordering the school, the variety of architecture and societal contrasts to frame photographic meaning. The interaction of form and narrative will be considered and through a phased process of conceptualization and implementation, participants will arrive at a cohesive series of photographs.

Tuition: $275/3 days + $25 Registration Fee
Payment due in full at time of registration. Cancellations must be made in writing 10-days before first day of workshop for a full tuition refund. Registration fee is non-refundable.

Space is limited, early enrollment is suggested. Please email info@sfstudioschool.org or call 415-398-4300 if you have questions or prefer to register by email.

"I wanted to thank you again for this wonderful workshop. It was a very important step for me and I am still really excited about my pictures and my new way of seeing."

    - Daniela Niessen, Photography Intensive, 2008

"A brief note to thank both of you for facilitating a unique experience for me, your guidance and approach to the art of photography was right -on! As a beginner photographer, I never felt criticized, or out of the loop. I left feeling that my approach to my work is valuable and at the same time the process increased my awareness of my potential for growth and need for development."

    - German Walteros, Photography Intensive 2008
