Technique is the personally developed mixture of skills that define the visual signature of the artist. Whether exacting, spontaneous or experimental, a combination of techniques creates the quality of form and color influencing the visual energy in painting. Texture, transparency, the layering of colors, density of paint, and the dynamics of brushwork are individual decisions made by the artist.

This course helps each student identify the painting techniques most relevant to his or her work, link them to his or her intent, increase the proficiency of application and expand their use as personally expressive tools.

Painting Critique Seminar examines the development of individual approaches to painting as an authentic representation of a practicing artist. Throughout the semester we will define and support each participant’s interests in painting and provide an overview related to the growth and refinement of his/her work. As a part of this process we will explore the concept of the emerging artist and the development of a mature body of work. Additionally, this semester we will curate a hypothetical exhibition of participants' work as a way of furthering the creative implications that identity has for artists today.

Painting Critique Seminar is suitable for intermediate to advanced students who have an ongoing body of work in development.
