The 5-week spring semester will emphasize painting tools and techniques by exploring the process of making a painting from start to finish. We will advance conceptual development hand-in-hand with a comprehensive technical investigation. Each of the five weeks will have several components: increasing knowledge of a painting’s development, understanding potential in the materials and the skill to realize it, recognizing perceptual relationships, and orchestrating color and mark-making through value patterns and color divisions. The weekly structure for the course stresses the steps needed to translate the artist’s intent into actuality. The continuous forming of aesthetic goals will be achieved through experiments, studies, discussion and critiques culminating in the final work.
Materials include mediums for preliminary work such as graphite or charcoal, watercolor and/or gouache and the participant’s choice of medium for his/her final painting, including oil or acrylic.
