The Painted Landscape Sketch

Painted Landscape Sketch

Saturday, September 17th & Sunday, September 18th
10:00AM to 5:30PM
Tuition: $275
Instructor: Lon Clark
Level: Beginning to Advanced

Join us as we explore one of the most spontaneous forms of landscape painting. The painted landscape sketch combines an improvised visual response to the harmonies and dramas of nature with ever-shifting impressions of color, light and space. Throughout this two-day workshop we will engage issues of painterly perception and technical facility, participate in lunchtime discussions, and conduct individual as well as group critiques. This stimulating, hands-on event merges inspiring locations, fresh approaches to the expression of landscape and the challenges presented by the spirit of place.

The painted landscape sketch is a vibrant part of the history of landscape painting practiced by painters such as Corot, Constable, Turner, Sargent and Seurat. Today it offers the possibility to expand one’s personal interests in painting through the pleasures of an exhilarating range of experiences from contemplation to experimentation.

Oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, mixed media, pastel, and collage, are all media suitable for the painted landscape sketch.

About the Instructor

Lon Clark has been involved with the subject of landscape painting both as an artist and instructor for over 50 years. He paints primarily from observation, engaging the abstract and expressionistic qualities of light and atmosphere. His studies began early with American master painter, Edwin Dickinson known for his premier coup landscape paintings and large and visually complex studio paintings. Clark continued his studies with Abstract Expressionist painter, Mercedes Matter who along with many pioneering contributions to American art was known as a student and close friend of painter, Hans Hoffman.

In his own work and practice, Lon Clark brings together fundamental values from these groundbreaking artists and has been steadfast in his personal desire to push the boundaries of landscape painting while encompassing the fundamental experience of nature’s visual dynamic. Clark encourages his students to see the landscape for both its narrative and abstract values as well as search out their own voice in moving beyond traditional plein air techniques. Through his teachings, students encounter bold new ways of seeing and a deeper understanding of the language of painting.
